Poor Example of an Audio Slideshow

Since there haven't been too many examples in our blog of poorly executed audio slideshows, I'll fill the void. This particular slideshow covers the 'Broward Spelling Bee', and does so with weak interviews and subpar sound quality. The slideshow ended abruptly--it didn't seem to tell any story whatsoever. There was also questionable narration at the beginning of the slideshow that had the absolute worst timing.

Kelli's Audio Slideshow Example

The following example is from BBC and titled "History of Vegas in Neon"

I chose it because I like the images and the interviews, as well as the music. There are some elements still missing however, like interviewer intro.

Linzy's Audio Slideshow

I found this slideshow on the BBC website. Photographer Timothy Allen has this unique perspective on the people living in extreme conditions around the world. Following film crews, he gets beautiful shots of African and its people:

Google Uner fire Audio Story

http://www.npr.org/2011/09/21/140658256/senate-panel-delves-into-whether-google-stifles-competition

Good factual intro

Who does Barnett represent and what did his soundbite mean? What are merits?
Second SOT: What does he mean awareness issue?
Third SOT and last RT: not very specific on what "technology" Google uses to possibly discriminate.
Story doesn't say allot overall, maybe its a "preview story" to set the scene for Google's hearing, but it doesn't say much other than "Google is have a hearing and there are no major charges yet".

Sonia Podcast

The beginning music is to loud you can barely hear her voice. She needs to be more energetic and hit more words. Very monotone voice which makes it boring.

I tried uploading different ways but I couldn't.

Video Critique

Broadcast Critique:

- In the introduction of the video, the frame isn’t centered on the speaker properly. You can see his partner’s shoulder and hair sticking out of the left side of the shot.

- The audio is fuzzy and makes buzzing noises throughout the clip.

- The exposure needs to be adjusted for indoor/outdoor shots on the camera.

- The reporter’s voice over cuts a little too close to the interviewee’s segments sometimes.

- I think the news story shouldn’t have focused on only one girl. I think it’s important to have a variety of sources (at least two perspectives in this case).

- Needs a better variety of b-roll footage.

Jordan's Photogasmic Fantasticness :)

I got these pictures from National Grographic because it's my favorite magazine and in my opinion they have the best photojournalists in the world.
I really love the stark contrast between the west (3D glasses) and the Iraqi audience. For some time we've heard of an inability for the two cultures to coexist and this picture perfectly encapsulates that they can.
I love dancers and this ballerina in particular is dancing in Swan Lake. For the most part her character is calm, charming, and tranquil. However, given the context of the dancer's environment (Kazakhstan), the contrast is very stark --a graceful dancer prancing around a desolate land. Plus the lighting is pretty :)

Tabitha's Clips/ Storify

Here is a link to a Storify I did this summer which directly relates to what we are doing in class. It has to do with the Egyptian Revolution and Al Jazeera's coverage. It contains links and critiques! Enjoy. http://storify.com/tabithalipkin/broadcast-coverage-of-the-egyptian-revolution-al-j

Lybian children

The topic of this photo is the girl. The simplicity of the lines of the windows and the neutral colors of the bus make the facial expressions of the girl more interesting for viewers.

Lybian children

Libyan child playing on destroyed tank. In this photo, there is an interesting contrast between a devastated landscape and the playful smile of a child.

Photography Examples

This photograph was taken during the Wall Street protest this morning. In this photograph you see the officer in action falling over the metal barricade in an attempt to grab the man in the orange hat. This photograph is a great example of catching action in a frame. The use of a wide lens gives the viewer a better understanding of what is going on and a sense of place by showing the reactions of the people and protesters in the background.

This photograph was taken in the Middle East during a protest to get President Ali Abdullah Saleh to resign. It is a photograph of a protester who was shot by government troops in Sana, Yemen. The photograph is very graphic and raw but it creates a reaction in the viewer by showing the reality of the situation. I think the angle that the photograph was taken from shows the reactions and the intensity of this situation. The viewer can see just enough of the other two men in the frame to get their emotions across.

Freezing moments in time (Brittany's Photos)

This photo is my favorite because the blurred background, with the clear, sharp focus on the doctor running to save this baby's life, freezes this moment in time. You see the immediacy and urgency of the situation and you know exactly what the doctor is feeling and thinking through his facial features.

The photographer grabs the emotion of the injured men in Yemen by taking the photo from a bird's eye view, which allows viewers to see how great a number of people were affected.

The photographer highlights the immensity of the wildfires by taking this photo from a lower angle, with the flames appearing to endlessly extend into the skies.

This is a photograph of protesters in Sanaa, Yemen Friday, September 16th. The picture's wide angle allows you to see a large portion of the thousands of people gathered for this demonstration.

A father teaches his son to ride a bike while a homeless man reads on the opposite side of the wall. The photographer used the wall as a division between two different worlds, but a reminder of how close the two are.

Pictures from 9/12

Portrait Assignment - Sydney and Diane

We played with the big sculpture outside, putting each other in the foreground and background.

Portrait: Huma

When taking photographs of Huma I tried a lot of different angles. For this image I am looking down at her and having her face the sun to get shadows behind her. I ended up cropping the original image. I like the way the sunlight is falling on her.

This image was one of my favorites from the photos I took. Originally I had her leap across the frame. Sadly my shutter wasn't fast enough to catch her mid-air. I ended up having her lean against the wall and caught her laughing...totally not fake.

Natalia- Photography upclose

Natalia was taking a picture of me and this is when I took this shot. I like it because her face is concentrating on taking a picture and it gives the photo a natural, candid look. I have always loved up close portraits.
